Sorge's
Restaurant was established on June 5, 1951 by Renato and Loretta
Sorge. The authentic, well-prepared meals quickly made Sorge's
the area's finest Italian restaurant.
Renato
(Ronnie) and his brother Remo came to the United States from Italy
in 1936. After 15 years experience with local restaurants Renato
purchased property at 68 W. Market Street and Sorge's Restaurant
was born. When Sorge's first welcomed customers, it consisted
of a counter and 11 booths (this is the area you see upon entering
the front door). The restaurant's dining facilities were expanded
in 1962 when an adjacent building was purchased and the present
first floor dining room was constructed. In 1968 the upstairs
area of both buildings was converted to the present main dining
room and banquet facilities. At this time, Sorge's has a total
seating capacity of 225 persons.
The
two large paintings on the front walls of the upstairs dining
area are from the Sorge's hometown of Strangolagalli, Italy. Ronnie,
Remo and their parents are pictured in one. The paintings are
the work of a former local artist, Al Valerio.
Between
1966 and 1973, Renato's two sons, Joseph and Michael, developed
a serious interest in the family business, working part-time while
in school. Joe went off to Cornell and Mike to SUNY at Cobleskill,
both returning to Corning with degrees in Restaurant Management.
Now they are dedicated to carrying on the Sorge tradition of providing
the finest Italian/American food, quickly and efficiently served,
at a reasonable price.
